Call it the Miranda-class or call it the Avenger-class, the family of starships based upon the original U.S.S. Reliant (NCC-1864) model, first seen in Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan, is perhaps the most famous Star Trek vessel never to have a show or movie revolve around it. The design is a classic, created by Joe Jennings and Mike Minor in 1982. After it's wonderful debut in Star Trek II, we saw it in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Star Trek Generations, and numerous incarnations on both Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Later, the a 3D model for the Reliant design would be created and used by CGI houses like Digital Muse and Foundation Imaging, for inclusion into the spectacular battle scenes during the two major wars of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. FICTIONAL STARSHIP CLASS
The concept of an Avenger-class Heavy Frigate was first documented by David John Nielsen in 1983. Merely working off of some beauty shots of the Reliant as seen in Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan, he created a superb set of drawings for this ship. These plans featured external views and an interesting cross-section. Todd Guenther, who would later on team up with Rick Sternbach to create the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D Blueprints, carried on Nielsen's work in his publication Starship Design. He upped the ante on the imagery of the Avenger-class Heavy Frigate, having the line art more closely follow the filming model. The Avenger-class Heavy Frigate was then given an even richer life when it was featured in Guenther's next work, Ships of the Star Fleet Volume I. Heralded by most Treknologists as the greatest piece of fan-fic Star Trek technical reference material ever published, this text forever established the Avenger-class Heavy Frigate as an icon of Starfleet. "AVENGER" VS. "MIRANDA" DEBATE

We acknowledge that the Star Trek Encyclopedia, first published in 1994, lists the U.S.S. Reliant, along with all vessels of similar design, as Miranda-class starships. However, David John Nielsen's drawings, first printed in 1983, established the Reliant as an Avenger-class Heavy Frigate more than a decade earlier. Although much of fandom has now adopted the Paramount-sanctioned Miranda classification, we have decided to hold true to the notion that the first starships of this design, including the Reliant, are of the Avenger-class line. Additionally, we feel there is enough room in the STAR TREK universe for both Avenger-class and Miranda-class starships, considering the diversity in design and time-span in which they have been seen. We have also strayed from Paramount-sanctioned resources by using Alex Rosenzweig's Timeline Of Star Trek History, which is more accurate for our needs than the more accepted Star Trek Chronology: The History Of The Future. Not only is the U.S.S. Avenger a Federation starship established in the fan-fic Treknology circles, but it is the central New Jersey chapter of STARFLEET: The International STAR TREK Fan Association (www.sfi.org). The U.S.S. Avenger (www.ussavenger.org) is a group of STAR TREK fans who share their appreciation for Gene Roddenberry's dream, and enjoy the company of other such progressive-thinking individuals. The Avenger is a member of STARFLEET's Region 7 (www.region7.com), and has been in existence since 1985. In the summer of 1992, I made the decision to join STARFLEET. As a resident of central New Jersey, I was assigned to a local chapter in its Region 7, which by chance turned out to be the U.S.S. Avenger (NCC-1860). After attending several club meetings, I became aware of my new vessel's historic fictional lineage. Being a technical draftsman by trade, I had spent much of my free time, before joining the Avenger, drawing various vessels from the STAR TREK universe. Therefore in mid-1994, after finishing basic exterior drawings of my new ship, I made the decision to create a complete set of deck plans of our heavy frigate. Over the next several years, with the help of Alex Rosenzweig and a library of sourcebooks, I fleshed out the interior of the Avenger, based upon established Motion Picture-era Treknology. EARLY HISTORY OF THE U.S.S. AVENGER
As a member of a STARFLEET chapter, we are encouraged to write and submit Star Trek stories, relating to our fictional characters as they would operate on our ship. I was never the one to write these type of yarns, mainly because I was not comfortable with the characters I would be working with. However, what I did enjoy was reading fictional construction histories as they appeared in Treknology reference materials such as Todd Guenther's Ships of the Star Fleet, Vol. One / Revised. The crew of the Avenger knew their fictional starship had a long history, prior to the date where the chapter's original roster took command back in 1985. However, nobody bothered to explore this era in any depth. Therefore, I took it upon myself to fully flesh out the conception, construction, evolution, and early missions of the U.S.S. Avenger (NCC-1860). This essay was originally published in March of 1996 in our chapter's newsletter Avenger News. It met with positive response, and since then has become another great piece of story-telling to add to the rich fictional history of the Avenger-class Heavy Frigate as a Federation starship class, and the physical setting for our group's characters. Although I give thanks to Alex Rosenzweig at the end of the essay, I would like to reaffirm my appreciation for his help in making this essay, as accurate and easily read as it now appears.
